Native
Plant Sale: The Kendall County
SWCD will hold our annual Native Perennial Garden Kits Sale in the Spring of
2010. Native plants can provide
a beautiful, hardy, drought resistant, low maintenance landscape while
benefiting the environment. We have selected plant species that are well adapted
to our climate extremes and growing season. The SWCD offers three different
garden kits: Butterfly Garden, Hummingbird Garden and Rain Garden. Keep an eye
open for more information as we approach the Spring season!Soil Test
Kits: Why should you soil test your lawn
and garden? Lawn and garden soil testing optimizes the growth of your lawn and
flowers or the yields of fruits and vegetables in your
garden. Imbalances of
nutrients can lead to poor growth and yield or flowering. Adding the right
amount of nutrients and eliminating the excesses allows nutrients to be utilized
efficiently. Your Soil Analysis System includes a sample bag, sampling probe,
and instructions for taking and sending in a soil sample. You will receive a
report back in the mail which includes pH, buffer, phosphorus, potassium,
calcium, magnesium, and organic matter. A fertilizer recommendation and
information on lawn and garden fertility will also be sent along with the
results. These kits are available at the Kendall County SWCD office for
$28 each. (This does not include
the cost for shipping the sample)

Rain
Barrels: Save the Rain for a sunny day! By using
rain barrels, you are benefiting the environment by reducing sewer runoff,
helping your garden and landscape thrive, reducing your water bill, and reducing
stress to the water supply. A rain barrel is a system that collects and
stores rainwater from your roof. Rain Barrels are made from recycled 55
gallon food barrels and cost $80. They are available in black, blue,
grey
and terra cotta. Spring Sale order forms are available below.
Composters: Yard
waste and food scraps make up 20% - 30% of garbage!! By composting yard
and kitchen waste, you send less garbage to landfills. Flowers,
vegetables, trees, shrubs, house plants, lawns, and container gardens grow
better in soil mixed with compost. Composting provides an almost constant source
of free fertilizer and soil conditioner. Through regular use of compost
you can greatly reduce the need for chemical fertilizers, pesticides and
herbicides, which saves money and reduces contamination of our waterways and
drinking water. Our composters are
made from a black, 55 gallon recycled food
barrel and are available for $110. Spring Sale order forms are
available below.
